“We can’t rely on the government to protect us.”

I’m a journalist at a local NPR affiliate, and I started an audio series called Trans Joy. I interview transgender people and ask them what trans joy means to them.  I want to combat negative and depressing misinformation about the trans community, and focus on finding queer joy and magic.

A major marker of success is joy and happiness, and I want to reach the youth who look to trans elders to see success. I hope trans youth can see themselves in these stories and come away knowing we are working to affect change in a world that’s backtracking on our rights. We can’t rely on the government to protect us. We have to build our own communities and protect each other.
